BOPP Tapes

What are BOPP Tapes?

The commonly used adhesive packing tapes that are used in sealing medium to heavy-duty carton sealing, shipping, inventory management and in logistics industries are actually BOPP tapes.

BOPP is abbreviated as Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene. The use of Polypropylene in manufacturing adhesive tapes is because of its amazing features and properties. It being a thermoplastic polymer which is malleable at certain specific temperatures and returns to the solid form when cooled.

Polypropylene film can be stretched in both the directions thus mentioned as biaxial oriented. This stretching of the film increases the strength and clarity/transparency of the film. High tensile strength and rugged nature making it ideal to use for packaging and labeling.

Polypropylene has several other properties like resistant to abrasion, chemically reacting agents, burst and moisture. The surface of the film is easy to print and coat, which makes it useful for custom printed BOPP packing tapes. The tape can be easily slitting when required.

BOPP tapes being thermoplastic polymer works in both the extreme temperatures that mean at low as well as high-temperature ranges. The adhesives used commonly are hot melt synthetic rubber as it seals quickly, reliable and consistent. These adhesives bonds quickly to the surface with additional properties like UV, shear and heat resistant. The outstanding features which compliment the tapes are:

  • Excellent clarity and high gloss.
  • Flawless dimensional stability and flatness.
  • Wrinkle and shrink proof.
  • Non-toxic and recyclable.
  • Resistant to low and high ranges of temperature.
  • UV, heat and moisture resistant.

We here at Packing Supply manufacture wide range of BOPP tapes like Coloured BOPP Tapes, Plain BOPP Tapes and Flipkart branded BOPP tapes. Coloured BOPP tapes are widely used in logistics and inventory management, transparent tapes are highly used for shipping and sealing purpose.

BOPP Packing Tape

BOPP packing tapes are some of the most commonly used tapes in shipping and inventory management today, and with good reason. The special molecular structure and the resin stabilization of polypropylene offer excellent mechanical and optical properties, which are especially useful in a variety of applications, one of which is packaging.

The Material

BOPP packing tape is made from biaxial oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film. Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer (which means it is pliable above a certain temperature, and returns to the solid state after cooling). Now, biaxial oriented polypropylene is a PP film stretched according to the machine direction and across the machine direction. This increases the strength as well as the clarity of the film. The structure also makes the automated and manual application of the packaging tape easier.

Features and Performance

Its rugged structure and high tensile strength make it the ideal material for packaging and labeling. It is also resistant to abrasion, moisture and various chemical solvents. It is easy to coat, print and even to laminate, which make it ideal for the manufacture of custom packaging tape. The material also offers minimal elongation (only around 150%, on average), and is burst-resistant. It is also easy to slit.

The material is a thermoplastic polymer so it could work in higher and lower temperatures. Not all manufacturers provide tensile strength statistics but industrial grade packing tape should be able to bear longitudinal pressure of around 27 pounds per inch and 44 lbs. per inch, transverse.

The average application temperature range for 30-micron, standard thickness (1.9 to 2.2 MIL) BOPP packaging tapes is between 35 and 110 degrees F while the operating temperature range is at 20 to 150 degrees F.

Most BOPP films are also non-toxic and therefore safe to use. Some comply with environmental protection standards,
and some are even made of recycled material.

Adhesives

BOPP packing tapes are coated with different types of adhesive. The most commonly used are hot melt synthetic rubber and acrylic. Hot melt adhesives are one of the most widely used because of the consistent, reliable and quick seals. This kind of adhesive quickly bonds to the surface and offers high tensile strength, which make it one of the best choices for securing shipment. It could adhere well to various surfaces including film and fiberboard.

Acrylic adhesives are another good option. They do not bond as quickly as hot melt adhesives (it has decent initial adhesion but it features gradual adhesion buildup that require around 24 hours to achieve maximum bond strength), but they have better heat, UV and shear resistance. This type of adhesive is recommended for heady-duty and long-term packaging.

Other adhesives include natural rubber, which has the same properties as hot melt synthetic rubber, except that it has better hold and could stick to dust, and heavy loads with various temperatures. Silicone adhesives are used too; it can be removed without leaving residue and is often used for applications that require exposure to extreme temperature.

Types of BOPP Packing Tape

There are three major types of BOPP packing tape – transparent, colored and printed/customized. Transparent BOPP adhesive tapes are ideal for shipment with special care instructions or products with packaging that must remain visible. Colored BOPP packing tapes are handy for inventory management as they can be utilized as a product identification and organization tool. Custom packing tape contribute to a more efficient inventory management, but the printed message can also be handy in communicating special care instructions, and the custom design and message could help in advertising and building brand awareness.

Adhesive Duct Tape

Adhesive duct tape is one of the most useful types of pressure-sensitive tapes on the market today due to its durability and its wide range of potential uses. Duct tape usually carries some type of cloth or scrim (fabric) backing, and is normally coated with a malleable plastic material known as low-density polyethylene. A variety of backing materials and adhesives can be used to comprise what is loosely called “duct tape,” but common characteristics include superior strength, flexibility, and higher-than-average stickiness. Duct tape is usually either grey or black, but it is available in a variety of other colors as well.

The roots of adhesive duct tape can be traced back to the early 1900’s, where a primitive form of duct tape made of cotton duck cloth with an adhesive solution applied to one side was in fairly common use. Known in those days as “duck tape,” it was utilized for all kinds of purposes ranging from shoe repair to steel cable reinforcement. Subsequent research led to a new type of adhesive tape being developed for military use during World War II. Scientists developed a new waterproof tape that could seal ammunition cases and keep them from being damaged by moisture. This tough new tape was able to be ripped by hand instead of having to be cut by scissors, making it very easy to use and quick to apply. The primary distinction between this new version of duct tape and the older “duck tape” was that the new formula utilized a rubber-based adhesive known as “Polycoat” on one side, which provided the tape’s waterproof characteristics. This new version of duct tape began to gain widespread acceptance within the military and was eventually offered for sale in hardware stores after the war.

Once duct tape began to be sold commercially in the 1950s, it was commonly used to wrap air ducts in construction projects. Its usefulness as an all-purpose household repair aid also contributed to its increasing popularity. Not too long after its commercial debut, the moniker “duct tape” came into widespread use to describe this multi-purpose adhesive tape. Albert Arno Incorporated, an HVAC company, took it a step further in 1960 by trademarking the name “Ductape” to describe its highly heat-resistant proprietary duct tape, capable of withstanding temperatures of up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. In the 1970s, a clever businessman named Jack Kahl created a breakthrough branding strategy by trademarking the once-archaic “duck tape” name and then creating a playful cartoon duck logo to go along with it. He devised an aggressive direct mail marketing plan that reached over 32,000 hardware stores, eventually leading his company, Manco, to control approximately 40 percent of the entire duct tape market.

Modern duct tape is manufactured using a layer of any one of a variety of fabrics, known as “fill yarn,” to provide strength. These threads may be polyester, cotton, fiberglass, rayon, or nylon. During the manufacturing process, this thin layer of fabric is then laminated to a low-density polyethylene backing, typically grey in color due to the use of powdered aluminum in the polyethylene. The most common commercially available adhesive duct tape width is 1.9 inches (48mm), although 2-inch (51mm) duct tape is also a popular choice. Rolls of duct tape are usually sold in lengths of 55 meters (approx. 60 yards). Duct tape does not carry any safety certifications such as a UL or Proposition 65 listing; this means that the performance of duct tape can exhibit signs of inconsistency in certain environments or with certain uses. Adhesive duct tape can also pose as an environmental hazard when burned, as it may give off toxic smoke when incinerated.

Duct tape is used in a wide variety of applications. The auto racing industry has long used duct tape as a means to perform makeshift repairs to fiberglass bodywork, as well as other “on-the-fly” jobs. Duct tape has been a “crew member” of every NASA space shuttle mission since 1965, and on one Apollo 13 mission in 1970, duct tape was used to help repair some broken on-board carbon dioxide filters, subsequently saving the lives of three astronauts. Other reported uses have ranged from treating warts to repairing helicopter blades to providing temporary fixes for dropped calls on iPhones. Adhesive duct tape has proven to be an excellent multi-purpose utility for all types of repair and construction projects. With the extensive variety of imaginative uses that duct tape can inspire, there may be a lot of truth to the statement popularized by authors Jim Berg and Tim Nyberg (a.k.a. “The Duct Tape Guys”): “It ain’t broke; it just lacks duct tape.”

Low Noise Adhesive Tape

The low noise tape is ideal for high volume packing environments and workplaces where minimum noise is required. These tapes are known to provide excellent adhesion and reliable performances especially when it comes to sealing cartons and parcels mainly for shipping to long distances.

They are available in various colors (including brown and clear) and in various size rolls, backed with water based adhesive that works efficiently at low and high temperatures. Most low noise tapes are cost effective and the best alternative to the vinyl tapes. They are environmentally friendly option as well, making them an all- round best choice.

Noise in a busy environment of work can be a real problem. Noise can adversely affect the momentum of the workers as well as their concentration in a busy warehouse or a packing room. It is therefore of importance to ensure an amicable working environment. Low adhesive noise tapes not only provide strong adhesiveness that seal boxes and cartons tightly, but also ensure a humble working place, without any noise from the dispensers.

They are mainly polythene in nature, and will provide the best solutions to packing requirements. They are easy to use tapes with the aid of cutters or scissors. For the fastest and neatest cuts however, a handled-packing tape dispenser or desktop can be used. They are durable and hard wearing tapes that provide high resistance to dirt and moisture.

The other features of low noise adhesive tapes include; they are non-stretchable, require no lamination, they are smooth and have a clean surface. Low noise tapes also have strong adhesion properties, they are durable and light (hence portable ), have high tensile strength, have a strong anti-pull property, are non-toxic, environmental friendly, come in high quality and they are also printable. The wide range of selection of low noise tapes in terms of color and length size will meet your needs.

With the use of a hand held lightweight dispenser, these sealing tapes are very easy to use. They have a wide variety of applications including carton sealing with automatic machines, gift wrapping, strapping, bundling and can also be used as decoration protectors. They are widely used in shipping of products, they are the most ideal tapes for carton sealing, pallets and merchandises. Low noise tapes also perform excellently for both machine and hand applications.

Besides the low noise advantages, you get lots of years (over ten years) of great experience with the adhesive low noise tape. The sizes are suitable for all customer needs, the printing logo property of this tape also provides customers to put their marks on cartons. They also undergo strict high quality control procedures during and after production. Low noise tapes are a great choice for mail rooms and perfect for high volume packing.

The other properties of a low noise tape include; has silent unwinding, no delamination of the foil, light unwinding force and stable quality. Always ensure that the tape is kept at low temperatures to ensure that the low noise property is not tempered with. A storage temperature of between 15 and 30 degrees is good enough.
